SELECTION OF EXOTIC SUGARCANE VARIETY K88-92 FOR LONG AN - BEN TRE REGION
Fifty exotic sugarcane varieties from Thailand with promise for alum and waterlogging resistance were studied for their adaptation to Long An-Ben Tre region which is characterized with waterlogging duw to heavy rains and tidal waves, The waterlogging conditions were created artificially at different stages of crop growth and for red rot disease (Glomerella tucumanensis Muller) resistance screening India’s Plug method was followed. Seventeen varieties performed well with respect to both characters. These varieties were tested in Long An – Ben Tre region under Testing Regulation of 10 TCN 298-97. Of these varieties, K88-92 (Uthong 1 x PL310) variety was found suitable for test production in the region because it was characterized by thick heavy stem, non-flowering, high yield, moderately good sugar content, late-maturity, and resistance to stem-borer and disease. Its cane yield, when converted into 10 CCS, was 130 tons/ha; 10% more than the check varieties K84-200 and VN84-4137. However, it was susceptible to white-leaf disease.
